The cast of Riverdale has a new routine to prepare for the show’s steamy make-out scenes: gargling with mouthwash for 60 seconds. The popular teen drama recently resumed filming for its upcoming fifth season, which will see the show jump ahead in time a full seven years.

Like any teen drama worth its salt, Riverdale relies heavily on the strength and chemistry of its various, oft-in-jeopardy relationships. For most of the series, the four main characters have been consistently coupled, with Lili Reinhart’s Betty Cooper and Cole Sprouse’s Jughead Jones being paired through the past four seasons, alongside KJ Apa’s Archie Andrews and Camilla Mendes’s Veronica Lodge. More recently, the relationship between Vanessa Morgan’s Toni Topaz and Madelaine Petsch’s Cheryl Blossom has been a fan favorite.

A new video posted on Instagram by show star KJ Apa shows him and costar Mendes taking “shots” of mouthwash on set and gargling for a full minute, before spitting into plastic bags. Not exactly the best way to set the mood for a make-out, but to each their own. Of course, the policy is likely one of the many safety precautions to protect the production, cast, and crew from COVID-19. In the caption, Apa writes, “our new normal is washing our mouths before every take of a make-out scene…”
